  • Helleborus

    Lenten Rose

    (Helleborus Orientalis)

Lenten Roses, or Hellebores, are not true roses. They like to hide in the shade with ferns. They are often one of the first blooms in the spring.

  • Buck rose

    Buck Rose

    (Rosa X species)

These roses were developed by Dr. Griffith Buck during his time at ISU. A collection of varieties can be found throughout the garden.

  • Brunnerra

    Brunnera

    (Brunnerra macrophylla “Silver Heart”)

Found across the garden, Brunnera often are called a false forget-me-not for their striking blue flowers. They hide in shady spots, and the variegated leaves seem to sparkle in sunlight.

  • Lily of the valley

    Lily of the Valley

    (Convallaria majalis)

Lily of the Valley is poisonous to humans and pets so beware! This plant is spread via underground rhizomes, causing a dense growth near the Hub.

  • Maidenhair Fern

    Maidenhair Fern

    (Adiantum species)

A very delicate fern that loves shady areas. Sometimes called a five fingered fern, this species has wide-spreading leaves. Native to North America, this fern is found in woodlands across the state.
